What Providers Need to Know About COVID-19

Simple Laboratories performs both PCR testing for an active infection with COVID-19 and serology testing for COVID-19 antibodies (IgG & IgM). All COVID-19 testing at Simple Laboratories is performed on high-throughput instrumentation. Additionally, the tests have all undergone significant validation studies and are authorized under the FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization.

Types of Tests

COVID-19 PCR Testing

PCR viral tests are performed on respiratory specimens collected by throat or nasal swab. The test directly detects the presence of SARS-CoV-2, the disease caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus. By detecting viral RNA, which will be present in the body before antibodies form or symptoms of the disease are present, the tests can tell whether or not someone has the virus very early on.

According to CDC, PCR testing may be helpful for patients who:

  • Are currently experiencing COVID-19 symptoms
  • Live in or recently traveled to an area with an ongoing spread of COVID-19
  • Have had close contact (within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes) with someone with confirmed COVID-19
  • Think you have been exposed to COVID-19  (*Source: CDC)

Whether the results are negative or positive, patients should be advised to follow CDC guidelines for wearing masks and social distancing to protect themselves and others in the community from getting sick.

 COVID-19 Antibody Testing

Antibody tests are a critical part of the public health response when assessing individual and population exposure to the virus. In addition to identifying if the patient has been exposed to COVID-19, the antibody test detects the presence or absence of the antibodies IgG and/or IgM in the blood at least 3 days after onset of symptoms.

According to CDC, antibody testing may be right for your patient if they:

  • Have had a positive test for COVID-19 and it has been at least 3 days and you want to know if you have detectable levels of IgM and/or IgG antibodies
  • Have not experienced a fever or felt feverish in the last 3 days
  • Have not experienced new or worsening symptoms of COVID-19 in the past 10 days: loss of smell or taste, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, feeling weak or lethargic, lightheadedness or dizziness, vomiting or diarrhea, slurred speech, and/or seizure.

After you—a healthcare provider—submit an order for a test, once the sample is collected, Simple Laboratories will process it. The result can be shared via fax, online portal etc.

Fall/Winter Testing for COVID-19 and Influenza A and B

Simple Laboratories can now test patients for Influenza A and/or B, SARS-CoV-2, and other respiratory pathogens using a single collection sample.

With the flu season in full swing in the midst of the pandemic, Simple Laboratories provides these tests to assist providers and healthcare professionals in diagnosing and treating their patients, playing a key role in lessening the tremendous burden placed on the healthcare system and protecting the community at large. According to CDC, the combination tests detect two types of influenza viruses—influenza A and/or B—and differentiates them from SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
